MUSCLES

An animal that is alive is never completely still.

At rest or even asleep, animals like ourselves still breathe because the lungs are moving.

Blood is pumped round the body by the heart.

Muscles make all the movements possible.

HOW DO THEY DO THIS?

Inside your body you have a skeleton.

Your skeleton does three important things.

1. It protects the delicate parts.

2. It supports your body

3. It lets you move.

Your muscles are attached to your bones and your bones have joints to enable you to bend.

Muscles and joints work together to allow movement.

Muscles can be divided into three kinds:

Skeletal muscles

Smooth muscles

Heart muscle

SKELETAL MUSCLES

These are sometimes called VOLUNTARY MUSCLES.

Skeletal muscles enable us to walk and to talk.

Skeletal muscles work when we want them to work.

A skeletal muscle may stretch from one bone to another or from a bone to the skin.

Somtimes a skeletal muscle is not attached directly to the bone but is linked to the bone by a tendon.

WHAT IS A TENDON?

Tendons are made out of strong fibrous tissue.

Tendons are not elastic and do not stretch.
