MOULD

Moulds which grow on damp bread or round windows in warm steamy bathrooms and kitchens are also fungi.

Foot infections called athlete's foot are also fungi!

Mould cannot make its own food and so it has to use the food made by other plants.

Mould is made up of tiny threads that cover the the food it uses.

The mould you can sometimes see growing on bread uses the starch in the bread.

For mould to grow it needs warmth, moisture and a shady place.

When the skin of fruit has been damaged you will often find that mould grows.

Mould is killed when heated to boiling point - one way to preserve fruit is to heat it in tight cans or jars.

Mould cannot grow at temperatures below freezing - another way to preserve food is to keep it frozen.
