Question: Please could you give me some simple information about microwaves? |
|
Answer: Microwaves are a type of electromagnetic
radiation. They are short high frequency radio waves with a range
from about 1 mm to 30 cm. They are used in a lot of applications
- such as radio, TV, radar, satellite communications, measuring
distances, weather forecasting and of course, cooking in microwave
ovens. Perhaps the last one is most well-known. A microwave oven works by using microwaves of a frequency that will easily pass into the food. The microwaves agitate the water molecules in the food, which makes them vibrate and this produces heat inside the food, and so cooks it. Satellite transmissions use a frequency that will pass easily through the earth's atmosphere and clouds. Microwaves can be dangerous because they can be absorbed by living tissues and the heat can damage or even kill the cells. They can cause burns, cataracts and damage the nervous system |
