WOOD

AND ITS MANY USEFUL PROPERTIES

Wood can be cut and shaped easily, to make furniture and for building.

Wood floats in water, it has been used for centuries to build ships.

Wood is a poor conductor of electricity, it is an insulator.

Wood is strong but flexible, cricket bats are traditionally made from willow.

WOOD is a natural product.

Wood will rot if it is not treated or painted.

New trees can be planted to replace those cut down, so it a replaceable commodity.

BUT remember that some trees grow much more slowly than others and therefore cannot be replaced quickly.

Some deciduous trees take hundreds of years to grow.

REMEMBER

that according to a Guiness Book of Records the oldest recorded tree in the world was a bristlecone pine which grew on the north-east face of Mount Wheeler in eastern Nevada, USA.

Studies have revealed it was about 5100 years old.
