Matter

Everything there is can be divided into one of three groups:

Solids

A bar of gold is a solid.    A solid has a definite shape and size, because its particles are tightly packed together.

Liquids

This drink is a liquid.    A liquid has a definite size, but not a definite shape. The particles take on the shape of the container and are not so tightly packed.

Gases

This gas is given off from the liquid.    A gas does not have a definite shape nor a definite size. The particles take up as much space as is available to them and are loosely packed.
