BURN OUT

 

The stages of BURN-OUT (Mattingly 1977)

 

1) Vague feelings of personal distress.

2) Feel reluctant to go to work.

3) Feel tired, irritable, mildly-depressed and bored.

4) Feel overworked.

5) Become less flexible. May be cynical or negative. Start to reduce social contacts.

6) Withdraw from people and activities. Miss meetings, eat lunch alone, avoid other colleagues by arriving early and leaving late.

7) Effectiveness at work decreases, so that it is noticed by colleagues.

 

These signs can reveal BURN OUT.

Caused by prolonged stress.

 

RESULTS OF BURN OUT

Alcohol and drug dependence.

Excessive smoking.

Absenteeism from work.

Marital conflict.

Depression.
